The Mountain Press today had a frontpage article (online version shorter than the paper) and an Editorial about the $500 million development project, which includes the Arrowmont property. Others are talking about it as well. Also see this article on Gatlinburg’s future.
Mountain Press article discusses $500 million development

In response to the August 25th editorial it Mountain Press….
Wow! That was quite an editorial. Kudos to the author! Don’t set up a petition it’s a waste of time, don’t fight to keep Arrowmont where it’s at, it’s a waste of time. Be apathetic, sit back and let whatever is going to happen happen. You have got to be kidding me! This horrible deal that both the city of Gatlinburg and the Pi Phi’s are so greedily supporting in hopes of being able to suck off the teat of corporate dollars is utterly disgusting. I also greatly dispute the connotation that I or any of the other 3600 plus individuals that signed the petition would be as sinfully greedy as Emily Tarr and the other members of the Pi Phi Grand Council. Not everyone is so willing to sacrifice history and reputation for consumerist gluttony. Some things are far more valuable than the all mighty dollar. This country is being brought to its knees because its gross obsession with free enterprise and this myth of laissez-faire capitalism. Why should Arrowmont stay in Gatlinburg? Unlike so many local residents, the city government appears to want to turn Gatlinburg into another Pigeon Forge. They are willing to sacrifice their integrity for new water parks and condos in hopes of making some quick cash before this tourist trap, like so many others, expires and abandons the land stripped of trees and home to only rusted chair lifts and plastic bears.
So — let’s take this lovely village and allow any growth that money can buy. let’s put in a water park and the condos — that will make everyone RICH! right? what’s wrong with that — after all money is the key to happiness.
and who cares that the increase in people and structures will require an entirely new sewage treatment system, new police/fire structures, new electrical and water structures.
so what if the nights sounds of crickets and frogs will be drowned out by cars and people.
and above all, who cares about the history — progress is much more important than the past. the past is dead and gone — let it go!
let’s move on and into an environment where the stars will be hidden by the new lights, the smell of the air will be changed from the sweet scent of trees to the rotting garbage of progress, and the village will become another not-so-little, stinking pseudo-Los Angeles circus.
let’s pave paradise and put up a parking lot!
